Reader's Digest Story(2007-12)

Reader's Digest is launching a new women's health magazine in March 2008 entitled Best Health. Lisa Murphy of Reader’s Digest is presently researching stories about real women in their 30s, 40s and 50s who have created their own fitness group and achieved some great results. In the case of Fredericton Boxing Club, there may be a group of women who started coming together a year ago and that have been successful in their pursuit of a healthier, more active physical lifestyle. Noticeable fitness gains, weight loss and improvement in boxing skills are a few of the key points of interest that Reader’s Digest is searching for.

If you have a success story regarding your experiences at the Fredericton Boxing Club that you would like to share, please contact Aubrey MacLeod during class by email or phone. Reader’s Digest is looking to put together a profile of a group of women before the Holiday break, so time is short.

Thank you for your assistance.

Fundraiser - Prospect Street Sobeys July 27 & 28th(2007-07)

All members and supporters:

The Fredericton Boxing Club will be raising funds for the club on July 27 and 28 at the Prospect Street Sobeys. We will be bagging grocery's for Sobey's customers on Friday between 5-9pm and Saturday between 11-4pm. Those who have participated in this fundraiser in previous years had a lot of fun and helped raised much need funds for the non-profit club. Our role will be to stand at the end of the cash registers and as the cashiers bag the groceries, placing the bags gently into the customers grocery cart. The requirements are quite simple: Fredericton Boxing Club shirt, a smile and a container to collect donations.

Please let Aubrey know which date you are available to assist with the fundraiser. If you are able to help out on both days, it would be very much appreciated.

A big thanks to all of our members and Sobeys for making this happen.

British Invasion 2007 a Huge Success (2007-05)

British Invasion 2007 - Bout 07 Derek Sullivan vs Mike Rose

May 5th 2007 will be a date remembered by Fredericton Boxing Club members for quite some time. Not only is it the first major International boxing show we have ever hosted, but it also may mark the day that Fredericton became a fight town. The crowd estimated at 800, was the largest ever for a Fredericton Boxing Club show and definitely one of the most vocal. The newspapers were interested, Fox Radio got behind us in a big way, Rogers television did a great job, and according to Mazzuca's and Digital World it was one of the hottest tickets they have sold in a very long time!

Way to go Fredericton Boxing Club!

A show like this does not happen without a lot of volunteer help. The support at the show from club members was outstanding, whether you were working, sponsoring, coaching or fighting, your contribution was the reason for our success. THANK YOU!!!

As for the fights, well we got edged by the Brits overall but the performances by our Fredericton Boxing Club boxers made me very proud. Everyone gave everything they had and they can hold their heads high. I know that Fredericton was proud of the athletes we presented to them that night.

As for team England, I could not have been more impressed with their professionalism, pride and organization. They were a top notch group to deal with and just damn nice lads. Whoever said Brits were pompous has never been to Sunderland! These guys rocked!

Well folks one big one down, and more to come. We have worked together to raise the profile of the Fredericton Boxing Club and the sport of boxing in Fredericton, now we need to keep that trend going.

Thanks again all of you that made this show possible!

Oromocto Boxing Club Re-opening (2007-03)

For all of you who have been waiting for the Oromocto Boxing Club to re-open, GREAT NEWS, it looks like we'll be ready to go later this spring. The planned opening date is Monday June 4th 2007.

The Town of Oromocto has provided space in the basement of the Oromocto Public Library. This is the same place that Mr. Joe Foley used for many years for the Oromocto Public Boxing Club. The Oromocto club will have a bit of a head start as Canadian Champ Shane Garnier, (who joined the Oromocto Boxing Club in December 2004 and continued boxing at the Fredericton Boxing Club) will be training at the new Oromocto Boxing Club. Fredericton head coach Aubrey MacLeod will take the reins as the Oromocto Boxing Club head coach and if all goes well, we will host our first boxing show in October.

We are all very excited about the Oromocto Boxing Club re-opening! There was a great bunch of kids training with us on Restigouche Road in 2004 & 2005 and I'm sure many of them will be anxious to get busy in June.

We are very grateful to the Mayor and Council of Oromocto for allowing us to bring Amateur Boxing back to Oromocto. Special thanks to Mr. Jim Arbeau and Mr. Mel Vance for guiding us through the process and lending their support to this worthy cause.

The Oromocto Boxing Club will be open to ages 9 - 99, for competitive and recreational training. We will be registered with Boxing New Brunswick and Boxing Canada. We will operate as a non-profit organization and have no paid employees. Anyone wishing to help out as a sponsor or coach please contact Aubrey MacLeod by one of the following methods:

Tyler Donovan & Shane Garnier perform well at the Canada Games (2007-03)

Tyler Donovan and Shane Garnier have once again made the Fredericton Boxing Club proud. Both boys put together solid efforts at the Canada Games. Though neither medalled, they both fought very well against older more experienced boxers. Tyler and Shane were upgraded from Cadet C to Junior to attend the Games and proved Boxing New Brunswick right in their decision to so.

Shane lost a hard fought decision to Alberta's Angus McNeilly 35-23, and Tyler lost a very narrow 37-38 decision to Alberta's Alex Rose. Both boys had an awesome time and represented New Brunswick well.

New Brunswick's Boxing team brought home one gold and one bronze medal. Moncton's Domenic Babineau has continued to prove what New Brunswick Boxing people have known for years, that he is one of the best pound for pound fighters in Canada. Domenic's gold medal performances at Cadet Nationals and Canada Games have shown everyone in Canada that World class boxers can come from New Brunswick too. Dalhousie's Matt Good, got a bye to the semis and lost a very close decision to come home with bronze.

Photos from the event are available under the Gallery section of the website.

Shane Garnier 2007 Canadian Champion (2007-02)

Garnier is Golden at Canadian Championships!

Fredericton Boxing Club's welterweight competitor Shane Garnier, is bringing home the gold from St. Catherines Ontario. Shane took less than a round to dispatch Nova Scotia's Mark Prosper in the semi finals on Friday, Feburary 16th and went on to beat Alberta boxer Paul MacKenzie by a score of 41 - 28 on Sunday. Mackenzie earned his spot in the final by stopping Robert Soare from Quebec.

In all, Fredericton Boxing Club sent three boxers to Nationals this year, Shane Garnier, Tyler Donovan and Liza Papazian. All three have worked very hard and made us all very proud, though Tyler and Liza didn't succeed in their quest for a Championship, they both performed very well and proved to all of Canada that they are indeed National Level boxers.

Shane won't have much time to celebrate his victory as both him and Tyler are off to Canada Games to in two weeks.

Congratulations Shane, Tyler and Liza!

Thank You Sponsors! (2007-02)

The Fredericton Boxing Club would like to thank the local businesses, clubs and residents who donated money to help send Tyler Donovan and Shane Garnier to Canadian Championships. Some of these are:

Burton Lions Club Presents $500.00 Cheque to Shane Garnier

The boys will head out on Wednesday 14 Feb to St. Catherine's Ontario, with the first bouts taking place on Friday.

We know they will make us proud! Without your kindness these kids would either have to pay out their own pocket to represent New Brunswick, or not go at all.

Thank You!

British Invasion 2007 - Fredericton Boxing Club to Host Team England in May (2007-01)

Fredericton hosting British Invasion 2007 boxing event

On May 5th the Fredericton Boxing Club will do battle with boxers from the Sunderland Boxing Club of Sunderland England. The Show will take place at 7:00 PM at the Fredericton Exhibition Grounds.

Head coach Aubrey MacLeod has been working with Sunderland coach Phil Jeffries and Valley Boxing Club, of Windsor Nova Scotia, head coach Chris Schofield since October to put this show together.

The British team will be in the Maritimes for one full week with 20 boxers doing battle at three separate Maritime venues. On Friday May 4th the Sunderland Boxing members will be hosted by the Valley Boxing Club for a show at the Windsor Arena. For ticket and sponsorship information please contact Aubrey MacLeod by calling 506.470.3938.

Donovan, Papazian and Garnier off to Canadian Championships (2007-01)

A veteran of two previous Nationals, 15-year-old Tyler Donovan will look to improve on his two Bronze medals this year as he once again is set to represent New Brunswick at Canadian Boxing Championships. Only this year both Tyler Donovan and Shane Garnier have the honor of representing New Brunswick at both the Cadet Nationals in St. Catherine's Ontario, and the Canada Games in Whitehorse.

This is the strongest team that New Brunswick has sent to Cadet Nationals in recent memory and Tyler and Shane are a big part of that. Both boxers have excellent chances of bringing home gold this year and each for different reasons. Tyler is the slick experienced veteran who has really put things together this year. Tyler will be bringing the whole package this time out. Shane will go to Ontario with a fist full of dynamite in each hand. The power punching light welterweight has only two decision wins out of his 13 victories. Shane will be a force to be reckoned with.

The only Senior boxer heading to Nationals this year will be newcomer Liza Papazian. Liza has reeled off 7 straight victories and only one defeat, all in just over a year. Her pure physical strength and incredible determination will surely have her opponents looking for the door at the Senior Championships this year in Quebec.

Good Luck to all three of you, you have already made us proud.

Fredericton Boxers Shine at Grand Falls Boxing Show (2006-04)

Grand Falls Boxing Club held it's first of hopefully many shows on April 22nd. The show organizers did an outstanding job sending the 300 plus fans home happy. Five Fredericton Boxers took part in the show, Tyler Donovan and Stacey Reid appeared in separate exhibition bouts with Tyler's bout with Canadian Champ Mitch Cormier turning into an all out brawl, much to the delight of the fans. Stacey Reid also wowed fans with her slick style and awesome hand speed against Grand Falls pugilist Mylene Beaulieu.

Twelve year old Nick Montgomery showed tremendous heart to rally back from slow first round and nearly win his match with Grand Falls boxer Cody Belflour. Nick was in control of the match by the third round, but came up just short of overcoming the deficit from the first round.

Next up was Fredericton heavyweight Jeremy Coulbourne, In what turned out to be awarded the "fight of the night" Jeremy blasted out Grand Falls boxer Andrew Crawford, stopping him at the end of round three. While Jeremy was likely ahead on the score cards throughout the bout, both boxers landed some big shots in every round. Jeremy was just the quicker, better conditioned boxer on this night, actually increasing his punch output in each of the three rounds. Jeremy's strong finish had the crowd on it's feet and his opponent in trouble, until referee Shannah Hook called a halt to the bout at about the 1:45 mark of the third.

The main event featured former Canada Games Boxer Chris Hayes, against Fredericton's wily veteran James Dowe. In the first round Chris seemed to control the pace with stiff jabs and hard one-two's, while James seemed content to take his time and look for openings. In the second James started to let four and five punch combinations go with great effect, he became the aggressor in the third round walking Chris down and landing almost at will. Chris did have his moments in the fight and looked quite strong, however the experience and hand speed of Dowe was the determining factor in the outcome.

Tyler Donovan Brings Home Bronze From Canadian Cadet Championships (2006-01)

Tyler Donovan put forth an incredible effort at Nationals this year. Everyone at the club has had the privilege of watching one of the hardest working athletes in Canada prepare for this year's Championships. Tyler came up on the short side of a 24-16 score against Quebec, but has nothing but positive things to take away from the experience. He fought one of the best fights of his young career and gained some very valuable experience in the process.

Way to go Ty, we are all very proud of you!
